History Part Two

The Famicom launched in Japan with three games: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Popeye.

The NES launched in the USA with an incredible eighteen games! Some of which were 10-Yard Fight, Donkey Kong Jr., Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Ice Climber, Wrecking Crew and Super Mario Bros.

To separate themselves from riskier “toy” products, Nintendo dubbed the machine an Entertainment System rather than a games console; the console itself was called the Control Deck and the games were called Game Paks - not video games.

It took until 1990 for Nintendo to found a European branch for direct distribution. This could have been a costly move but by 1990 the NES was already the world’s best-selling console.

The aptly-chosen slogan for the NES was “It can’t be beaten”.

There were two PAL versions of the NES released in the UK, one by Mattel and one by Nintendo. The Mattel console has a smoother surface to the rougher “NES Version”.

In the early 80s, the great video games crash had desolated commercial gaming. Five years after its release, the NES had revived the consumer base and recreated a multi-billion dollar industry.

In the late Eighties, Sega hit back with their superior Mega Drive (known as the Genesis in the USA) and effectively ended Nintendo’s easy dominance of the market.

Once the SNES was released in the early Nineties, the NES could be said to have hung up its gloves but its legacy is still felt today in the number of franchises born on this classic console.

The last officially licensed title released in North America was Wario’s Woods in 1994.
